EM 014 Mast Cell

Mast Cell

Mast cells are immune cells that engage in inflammatory responses by releasing molecules that dilate blood vessels and recruit other cells. They have large secretion granules contain histamine and heparin.

Examine the morphology of this mast cell as seen by transmission electron microscope (TEM):

  • (dark green)
  • (blue)
    • (purple)
  • (yellow) - only a small portion is seen in this section.
  • (red) - relatively few are seen in this section.
  • (cyan)
  • (dark purple) - many large granules whose contents are homogenous and electron-dense.
  • Cytoplasm (green)

Estimate the length of this mast cell: [ + ]

~15 µm.

Estimate the diameter of the secretion granules: [ + ]

~0.4 to 1.0 µm.

This mast cell is surrounded by collagen fibrils in both and cross sections.
