EM 026 Chief Cell

Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum

Chief cells of the stomach secrete digestive enzymes (pepsinogen and gastric lipase).

These enzymes are produced by the large amounts of rough endoplasmic reticulum in the base of the cell. The Golgi packages these proteins into large, secretion granules that are released from the he apical surface of the cell that faces the lumen.

  • (blue) - at the base of the cell
  • (purple) - large, electron-dense granules clustered in the apical region of the cell
  • (yellow) - juxtanuclear localization and well-developed
  • (red)
  • (cyan) - many cisternae located at the base of the cell. At higher magnification, the ribosomes on its surface appear as black dots.
  • Cytoplasm (green)

Portions of adjacent chief cells (tan) can also be seen.
