EM 033 Gastroduodenal Junction

Gastroduodenal Junction

Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the gastroduodenal junction between the pylorus of the stomach (left) and duodenum of the small intestine (right).

The pylori sphincter is a band of smooth muscle between the pylorus and the duodenum. It is formed from the circular (middle) layer of smooth muscle in the muscularis externa.

When it is relaxed, partially digested food (i.e., chyme) passes from the stomach into the small intestine. When it is contracted, it prevents this from happening.
