EM 240 Hepatocytes

Hepatocytes

Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of hepatocytes in the liver. Hepatocytes are arranged in branching, interconnecting plates separated by thin-walled .

  • Hepatocytes - large cells (20 x 30 µm)
    • Cell surface specializations
      • - many small, disorganized processes
      • - tight junctions, desmosomes and gap junctions
      • - small tubes (1-2 µm diameter) between adjacent cells through which bile flows
    • (blue) - some are binucleate
      • Large amounts of euchromatin
      • Prominent nucleolus
    • (red) - large number of elongated mitochondria
    • (dark green) - found throughout the cytoplasm
      • Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum - flattened cisternae
      • Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum - tubulovesicular
    • Cytoplasm (green)
  • - large diameter capillaries with a discontinuous
  • (or perisinusoidal space) - small space (1-2 µm wide) between hepatocytes and sinusoids
    • Hepatocytes have many small processes that extend into this space
