EM 264 Oocyte

Secondary Follicle

Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a secondary follicle in the ovary. The oocyte is surrounded by a layer of glycoproteins (zona pellucida) and cumulus cells (cumulus oophorus). The later form a hillock that attaches it to the granulosa cells that surround that fluid-filled antrum.

  • (yellow) - large cell that undergoes meiotic division to form an ovum
  • Zona Pellucida (not visible) - layer of glycoproteins between the oocyte and cumulus cells
  • (cyan() - cumulus cells that project into the antrum and support the oocyte
    • (purple) - innermost layer of cumulus cells that surround the oocyte
  • - single chamber filled with follicular fluid
  • (blue) - several layers surround the follicular antrum
  • Basal lamina (not visible) - separates the outer layer of granulosa cells from the theca interna
  • (green) - layer of connective tissue that surrounds the granulosa cells (damaged in this specimen)
