EM 266 Lung

Lung Lobule

Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a lobule of a lung.

The surface of the lung is covered by the (yellow) that allows sliding during lung inflation and deflation. The cross-section shows the sponge-like structure of the lung.

  • (dark blue) - conveys air from the larger bronchioles to the respiratory airways
    • Conducting airways warm, moisten and remove debris from the air
    • Surrounded by a thin layer of smooth muscle cells
  • (tan) - parts of the airways involved in the exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide
    • Respiratory bronchioles (none visible)
    • Alveolar ducts (tan)
    • Alveolar sacs (tan)
    • Alveoli (tan)
  • Blood Vessels - lumens are full of red blood cells
    • of the pulmonary artery (red) alongside the terminal bronchiole
    • (light blue)
