EM 279 Thyrotroph

Thyrotrophs

Thyrotrophs are cells in the anterior pituitary that produce thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH stimulates the thyroid to release thyroid hormones T3 and T4 which increase metabolism in most cells.

Thyrotrophs are characterized by small, round secretory granules.

  • (blue)
    • Nucleolus (dark blue)
    • Nuclear Envelope (purple)
  • (red)
  • (cyan)
  • (black) - most are found near the plasma membrane
  • Cytoplasm (green)

Thyrotrophs are ~5% of the anterior pituitary cells.
