EM 323 Primordial Follicle

Primordial Follicle

Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a primordial follicle containing a primary oocyte and a single layer of granulosa cells. The plasma membrane of the oocyte is closely apposed to the surface of the granulosa cells.

  • (orange) - contains relatively few organelles except for mitochondria with few cristae
    • Meiotic arrest during prophase of the first cell division of meiosis
  • (green) - single layer of flattened cells
  • (purple) - surrounds the follicle and separates it from nearby connective tissue
  • (tan) - connective tissue of the ovarian cortex
